Making Sense out of the 11.6” Samsung Series 3 Laptop

The 11.6” Samsung Series 3 laptop has been marketed as a powerful player in this particular market. It has a processor with Intel 2nd Generation Core i3-2357m readings. That means that the user effectively has 1.3 GHz to work with. The memory is fairly remarkable at 4GB which is used on a hard drive of 320 GB at 5400 rpm. The starting price is $699.99 and some people might consider that to be rather steep for the Staples store.

Specifications: It must be said that the Samsung Series 3 laptop has a rather ambitious target to remain economical especially if you compare it to the Series 9 lists. Moreover it is one of the few 11” laptops that have had the presence of mind to include the much desired Intel Core i3 CPU. Does that make a lot of difference to someone who wants their latest gadget to work? Most consumers would argue that the increase in specification is not quite in tandem with the pricing strategy that Samsung has decided to employ. For example there are other ultra portable laptops that would beat that price while sleeping. From an aesthetic point of view, there are the sharp lines which have been traditionally associated with the brand.

When the Series 9 was proposed, there were all sorts of commentaries and speculation that it might even overtake the MacBook Air. It carried the Windows badge with honor. The prices cause many to doubt their decisions. For example the 11” version was coming in at $1000. This was simply unacceptable when you realized that the rest of the market was trying to rationalize costs and help consumers to enjoy this piece of gear. The Samsung Series 3 luxury laptop is now exclusive to the USA and is being sold by Staples. They may want to rethink that strategy because exclusivity is not going to work well on this occasion.

Some of the stiffest competition against the Samsung Series 3 luxury laptop will come from unlikely sources such as the Lenovo IdeaPad S205 as well as the underrated HP Pavilion dm1z. What is the secret of these rival laptops? They can do most of the things that Samsung proposes to do but the sting in the tail is that they do it at a lower cost. Nevertheless Samsung has to be given credit for trying to bring its Series 9 closer to the people that have made them a household name.

Best Feature: We think that the processor is sufficiently impressive to carry off the occasional mishaps which have befallen the Samsung Series 3 luxury laptop. The hard drive is solid, if not remarkable. To crown it all they have the Windows 7 Home Edition.

Pros: This is a portable gadget with measurements of 10.9” by 7.9” by 1.0”. This weighs an extremely lightweight 2.7lbs. The only problem is that virtually everyone in the class is doing the same thing so these achievements lose some of their shine.

Cons: The pricing of the Samsung Series 3 luxury laptop is not yet quite there. However it must be said that there are some discounts of up to $100 so you may strike a bargain.

Summary: This laptop is competing with rivals such as the ASUS Eee PC 1015PX Atom is 10.1” with TFT and only costs $276.99. In other words Samsung will continue to struggle on price for this one.  Of course we have to give them some credit for beating the Toshiba Portege R835-P70 which starts at a rather alarming $729.99 a piece.

Editor Rating: For its ambitions, this laptop gets 4 stars out of 5.
